DR. ANDREW SEMPLE & SAMANTHA SEMPLE-THOMAS FROM SOUTHAMPTON FACE FIVE-YEAR BAN OVER CRUELTY TO DONKEYS IN HAMPSHIRE

A husband and wife duo, Dr. Andrew Semple and Samantha Semple-Thomas, have been subjected to a five-year prohibition from owning equines following a disturbing case of neglect involving their donkeys in Beaulieu, Hampshire. The investigation was carried out by the RSPCA, which uncovered shocking conditions in which the animals were kept. Inspectors found five donkeys suffering in environments that were far from suitable for their well-being. The animals were observed consuming mouldy hay, a clear indication of inadequate nutrition, and were struggling to navigate through thick, muddy terrain that had become waterlogged, further exacerbating their suffering.

Among the most distressing findings was the discovery of a deceased donkey in a nearby field. The carcass appeared to have been in that state for a considerable period, with one of its eyes missing, suggesting a prolonged period of neglect or injury that went unaddressed. The living donkeys, identified as Fire, Sooty, River, Rosie, and Ruby, were found to be severely underweight, with coats that were in poor condition, and there were serious concerns about the development of mud fever, a painful skin condition caused by prolonged exposure to wet and muddy environments.

Further inspection revealed that some of the donkeys suffered from dental problems, including mouth ulcers, which would have made eating difficult and painful. The situation had deteriorated further due to the waterlogged ground, which created an unhealthy living space for the animals. During court proceedings, it was revealed that the decline in care coincided with personal hardships faced by Mrs. Samantha Semple-Thomas, including a back injury and the loss of her father. Dr. Semple admitted that he was only feeding the donkeys once a day and was aware that they had no access to hay, despite being responsible for their overall welfare.

Both owners expressed remorse during the sentencing, which included an 18-month community order, 120 hours of unpaid work, and a fine of £2,500. The RSPCA emphasized the importance of responsible pet ownership, stating, "Animals are reliant on owners to be given everything they need to survive, including an appropriate diet and suitable living conditions." The organization also urged pet owners who find themselves overwhelmed to seek help before neglecting their animals.

Following rescue, the donkeys—Fire, Sooty, River, Rosie, and Ruby—were taken to The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth. They are now adjusting to their new environment, receiving proper care, and gradually building bonds with their caretakers, offering them a chance at a healthier and happier life after the ordeal they endured in Hampshire.
