DOUGLAS WINTER'S SHOCKING CRIME IN DUNDEE: INDECENT IMAGES AND GROOMING ALERT
A 67-year-old man from Dundee, Douglas Winter, has been subjected to a fine after being caught in a disturbing online grooming scheme. The incident unfolded when Winter engaged with an undercover police officer, believing they were a minor, and attempted to solicit explicit images. The police operation was initiated to combat online child exploitation, and Winter’s actions were uncovered during this investigation.According to the prosecution, represented by Kate Scarborough, Winter initially used a dating website with the apparent intent to groom a young person. The police set up an undercover operation, during which Winter communicated via WhatsApp, where he explicitly asked for lewd images. The police had posed as a 14-year-old, and Winter was aware of the minor’s age, making his actions particularly egregious.
Ms. Scarborough detailed that Winter made numerous sexual remarks during the exchanges and even sent an indecent photograph of himself. The conversation revealed his clear intent to engage in sexual communication with a minor, which is a serious criminal offense. The police arrested Winter at his residence on Murrayfield Gardens in Dundee after the exchanges took place between August 7 and August 15, 2023.
During the court proceedings at Dundee Sheriff Court, solicitor John Boyle explained that after a social work report was prepared, the option of unpaid work was deemed unfeasible due to Winter’s health issues. The court was presented with the facts of the case, emphasizing the gravity of Winter’s actions and the potential harm caused.
Sheriff John Rafferty expressed his disapproval of the punishment, stating, “A fine is a grossly inadequate punishment in your case but it’s the only one available to me.” Ultimately, Winter was fined £400 and placed under supervision for a period of three years. Additionally, he was ordered to comply with a conduct requirement and will be registered as a sex offender for three years, reflecting the serious nature of his offenses and the need for ongoing monitoring.
