DOUGLAS MERRETT FROM WILLINGTON JAILED FOR SEXUAL MISCONDUCT AT LINCOLNSHIRE CAMP
In a case that has shocked the local community, Douglas Merrett, a 36-year-old scoutmaster from Willoughton near Gainsborough, was sentenced to six months in prison following his involvement in a disturbing incident at a camp in Lincolnshire. The incident, which took place in May 2005, involved Merrett engaging in inappropriate behavior towards two young girls during a camping trip.According to court proceedings at Lincoln Crown Court, Merrett was found to be intoxicated at the time of the incident. Witnesses and evidence presented during the trial indicated that he entered the children’s tent while under the influence of alcohol, specifically a mixture of beer and spirits. His state of intoxication appeared to have contributed to his inappropriate actions that day.
The court heard that Merrett attempted to kiss two girls aged 12 and 13, and in addition to this, he made an attempt to touch one of the girls inappropriately. These actions constituted serious breaches of trust and safety, especially considering his role as a scoutmaster responsible for the welfare of young children.
Merrett admitted to three charges related to sexual activity with a child, which underscored the gravity of his misconduct. The judge, Andrew Hamilton, emphasized the need for strict measures to protect children from individuals who abuse positions of authority. As part of his sentencing, Merrett was ordered to register as a sex offender and was explicitly banned from working with children in any capacity in the future.
This case has raised concerns among parents and community members about safeguarding measures at youth camps and the importance of vigilance in supervising individuals entrusted with the care of minors. The court’s decision aims to serve as a warning to others and to reinforce the importance of accountability in roles involving children’s safety.
