RUTHERGLEN PAEDOPHILE DOUGLAS ALEXANDER SENTENCED TO NINE MONTHS FOR ABUSING 7-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In January 2009, a deeply disturbing case emerged from Rutherglen involving Douglas Alexander, a man with a long-standing background as a police officer, who was convicted of heinous crimes against a young girl. The victim, a seven-year-old girl, was subjected to a series of sexual abuses by Alexander, which have left a lasting impact on her family and the community.Alexander, aged 72, was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court after pleading guilty to charges of enticing the young girl to go for a sleepover, during which he committed acts of sexual abuse. The court heard that he had encouraged the girl to touch his genitals, specifically referring to his penis as “tinky winky,” a disturbing detail that underscores the predatory nature of his actions.
The mother of the victim, who has chosen to remain anonymous, expressed her profound disappointment and outrage over the leniency of the nine-month sentence handed down to Alexander. She voiced her fears that he might not serve the full term, especially given the fact that he is currently engaged in courses aimed at rehabilitating individuals with perverted tendencies. These circumstances led her to believe that Alexander might be released early, possibly by the summer, which has only intensified her feelings of betrayal and frustration.
She revealed that she was not present in court during the sentencing, having been left disillusioned by previous instances where no sentence was imposed. When she received the news over the phone, she described her reaction as numb, admitting that she was too frightened to hope for a harsher punishment. “To be honest I didn’t have a reaction when I heard because I was too scared to hope for anything. If I hoped for something and it came against me, I would have been devastated,” she explained.
Despite her initial resignation, she now feels furious about the short duration of the sentence, especially considering that Alexander’s crimes spanned over a year. “The fact is he abused my daughter for over a year and I would have expected at least the equivalent for him in jail,” she stated. Her concern extends to her young daughter, who is still too young to fully understand what has happened. The mother said that her daughter is simply happy that Alexander is behind bars, but she has explained to her that he should have been sentenced to a much longer term.
She also criticized Alexander’s demeanor during the court proceedings. She recounted that he appeared to be crying and shaking when he pleaded guilty, but she believes his display was insincere, especially considering his past as a police officer. “He was kidding on he was crying and shaking, but he wasn’t doing any of that when he was abusing my wee lassie,” she said.
Douglas Alexander, who resided at Lochbrae Court in Rutherglen, had served as a police officer for three decades before his arrest. His sentencing included a requirement to register as a sex offender for ten years. The case has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the tragic betrayal of trust and the devastating impact of such crimes on innocent victims and their families.
