DOMINICK AKINLADE FROM MERTON ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE CHILD IMAGE OFFENSES IN LONDON

In a case that has drawn significant attention, Dominick Akinlade, a 37-year-old former police officer from Merton, faced the courts in Southwark Crown Court after admitting to serious charges related to indecent images of children. The proceedings revealed that Akinlade had been found in possession of multiple such images on his personal home computer, which he had downloaded from the internet, an act classified as 'making' images under the Protection of Children Act.

These allegations came to light following a covert operation conducted by the Metropolitan Police's Paedophile Unit. On October 1 of the previous year, officers arrested Akinlade at his residence in Merton, leading to a detailed investigation into his activities. It was confirmed that none of the indecent images were stored on Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) computers, alleviating concerns about any misuse of official resources.

During the court hearing, Akinlade pleaded guilty to five counts of making indecent images of children. The court was informed that he had resigned from the Metropolitan Police Service in October, shortly after his arrest. Despite the gravity of the charges, the judge opted for a relatively lenient sentence, handing Akinlade a six-month jail term but suspending it for two years. This means that Akinlade will not serve time in prison unless he commits another offense within the suspension period.

It was emphasized during the proceedings that Akinlade did not come into contact with any of the children depicted in the images, and there was no evidence suggesting any direct abuse or exploitation. Following his arrest, he was taken to a police station in central London for further questioning and was subsequently bailed to return to court on February 1 for the formal charging process. His sentencing is scheduled for May 19 at Southwark Crown Court, where the full extent of his actions will be considered.
