DOMINIC O’CONNOR KIRKUBBIN HORRIFIC DOG CRUELTY CASE IN NORTHERN IRELAND
Dominic O’Connor, born on 18 October 1989, and previously known by aliases William Mocsari and William Stevens, has been at the center of a disturbing animal cruelty case that has shocked the community of Kircubbin in County Down. The incident, which took place in December 2016, involved the brutal killing of a four-year-old collie named Jess, and the subsequent inhumane treatment of her remains.According to court records, O’Connor strangled Jess using a lead, an act that demonstrated a shocking level of cruelty and disregard for animal life. Following her death, he cooked her using a mixture that included a few onions and an Oxo cube, and then fed the stew to his other dog. The gruesome details did not end there; after cooking Jess, O’Connor placed her remains on a fire, burning her body until only ashes remained. These ashes were later disposed of by dumping them into Portavogie Harbour, a location in close proximity to Kircubbin.
The authorities uncovered the extent of O’Connor’s actions after he confided in hospital health professionals about what he had done. This confession prompted police to investigate further, leading them to his residence. Upon inspection, officers discovered evidence of the crime, including burned dog hair and a liquid residue on the fire grate, confirming the horrific nature of the incident.
O’Connor was subsequently charged and found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a dog. His actions earned him a ban from owning any animals for life, a measure intended to prevent further cruelty. In November 2017, he was sentenced to two years in prison for his crimes, with an additional two years on licence following his release.
The court heard that O’Connor had purchased Jess through an online classifieds site called Gumtree, which added a layer of betrayal to the case, as the dog was intended to be a pet and companion. The judge described the offence as “particularly disgraceful and heinous,” emphasizing the cruelty and deception involved. The judge also criticized O’Connor for misleading those who had entrusted him with Jess, suggesting that he had no intention of caring for her but rather intended to inflict harm.
During the sentencing, the judge condemned O’Connor’s behavior as “barbaric and calculated,” highlighting the severity of his actions. The court also noted that O’Connor had raised questions about his mental health; however, he failed to provide any medical evidence to support claims of mental illness. His conduct was characterized by a lack of remorse, and despite not testifying in his own defense, O’Connor appeared to challenge the evidence presented against him.
It was also revealed that O’Connor had a troubling criminal history, with 23 previous convictions, which underscored a pattern of problematic behavior. His family is based in Bangor, County Down, and he also has connections to Hammersmith in London and Surrey, indicating a broader geographical background.
This case has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for stricter measures to prevent such acts of cruelty. The community of Kircubbin and animal welfare advocates continue to demand justice and increased awareness about animal abuse issues in Northern Ireland.
