VIOLENT DOUBLE RAPIST GIVEN INDEFINITE JAIL SENTENCE
A dangerous repeat sexual offender has been sentenced to an indefinite prison term for public protection following two severe assaults on sex workers. One attack involved a threat with a weapon similar to a 'Rambo' style knife.
At Leeds Crown Court, Judge Peter Collier QC, the lead judge, remarked that the trauma caused to the victims would likely persist for a long time.
One victim even attempted to take her own life after the attack.
In her victim impact statement, she explained that, as a prostitute, she expected some rough treatment but had not previously felt compelled to report such violence.
She described her experience as extremely violent and expressed a desire to prevent him from harming others.
The judge observed that Cojan displayed no remorse or awareness of his misconduct, indicating a continued risk.
Cojan, 23 years old from Royal Park Grove in Leeds, was ordered to serve a minimum of eight years before parole eligibility.
A jury found him guilty of four counts of rape and two of robbery against two women.
Prosecutor Matthew Bean detailed that Cojan initially agreed to pay £15 for sex on August 14 last year after approaching a prostitute on Bradford’s City Road.
After engaging in sex behind a pub, he assaulted her by punching her, took her money, and then raped her while brandishing a 'Rambo' style knife.
Later, on January 16, in Leeds, he picked up another prostitute, paid her for oral sex, and then threatened her with a knife, forcing her to hand over her money and raping her.
Following sentencing, Detective Superintendent Paul Taylor commented, 'Such attacks are unacceptable.' He also commended the victims for their courage in reporting the crimes after what he described as terrifying ordeals.
