DEWI WYN JONES FROM NEWTON-LE-WILLOWS JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN LIVERPOOL

In a serious case that has shocked the community of Newton-le-Willows, Dewi Wyn Jones, a 61-year-old former teacher, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison after being found guilty of possessing and making indecent images of children. The case was heard at Liverpool Crown Court, where detailed evidence revealed the extent of Jones's disturbing activities.

Authorities conducted a raid on Jones's residence, located on Dunlin Avenue in Newton-le-Willows, during which his computer was seized for analysis. The investigation uncovered hundreds of illicit images, many classified in the two most severe categories of child exploitation material. The court was informed that a total of 703 images were discovered, with 110 of these falling into the most serious groups, highlighting the gravity of the offenses committed between July 2009 and September 2012.

Judge Alan Conrad, QC, presided over the case and delivered the sentence, emphasizing that although Jones had not re-offended since his previous conviction, his underlying sexual interest in children persisted. Jones had previously served a two-and-a-half-year sentence after being convicted in 1988 for child sex offenses, which led him to leave the teaching profession. The judge pointed out that the current offenses involved real victims, as children are exploited by those who produce such images, making the crimes particularly heinous.

During police interviews, Jones admitted to a curiosity that spanned over three years and acknowledged that his lack of sexual fulfillment contributed to his viewing of indecent images of children. He claimed that these images would sometimes appear as pop-up links while he was browsing adult pornography, although evidence showed that he also accessed direct links to the child abuse material. Prosecutor Joanne Maxwell stated that Jones now recognizes his unhealthy fascination with such images.

It was revealed that Jones would view these images privately at his home, often when his wife and daughter were not present. He pleaded guilty to 12 charges of making indecent images and one charge of possessing such images. The court was told that Jones's actions were carried out in a private setting, but the impact of his behavior is far-reaching and deeply troubling.

In mitigation, Jones's defense lawyer, Tom Watson, acknowledged that the issues which led to his initial trouble in the 1980s had not entirely disappeared but that Jones was attempting to come to terms with his problems. Since losing his career as a teacher, he has largely been a house husband and is the primary carer for his elderly father, who is in his 90s.

As part of his sentence, the court imposed a five-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order, restricting Jones's internet use to prevent further offenses. Additionally, he was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for a period of ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and safeguarding the community from potential harm.
