MAN SENT TO PRISON OVER WOUNDING
2015.Dewayne Mason denied physically assaulting Jemma Cadle, a mother of two, at her residence on Warren Crescent in Headington on February 15.
Nevertheless, a jury comprising seven women and five men unanimously convicted him of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm.
The verdict was delivered yesterday.
During the proceedings at Oxford Crown Court, it was detailed that Mason arrived at Ms Cadle’s home around 6am.
He knocked aggressively on her door, proceeded to headbutt her, repeatedly struck her with his fists, and additionally, pulled her by her hair.
The court’s recorder, Clive Broe, stated that Mason’s assault resulted in facial injuries and a fractured rib for Ms Cadle.
He emphasized that Mason’s actions were not only violent and prolonged but also involved degrading her by showing her her injuries in a mirror.
Recorder Broe commented: “This was a violent and sustained attack on a woman who was alone in her home during the early hours.
You are a man of considerable build, while she described herself as ‘skinny’.
She was vulnerable, being alone and more susceptible at that time of the morning.
He continued: “Your actions degraded her further by demonstrating her injuries to her in the mirror.” The court also learned that Mason, aged 38 from Humfrey Road, Barton, had a criminal record with 15 convictions covering 46 offences, including two for common assault.
Defense attorney Lauren Soertsz argued that imposing a prison sentence would significantly impact Mason’s three children, particularly his youngest, who is eight years old.
However, Mr Broe remarked that while Mason’s actions were unfortunate, the focus remained on the serious nature of the attack and its impact on the victim.
