DERYCK HUGHES FROM OLD COLWYN JAILED FOR BREACHING SEXUAL HARM PREVENTION ORDER IN MOLD

In a case that has raised serious concerns about compliance with court orders aimed at protecting the public from sexual harm, Deryck Michael Hughes, a 56-year-old resident of Old Colwyn, was sentenced to prison after deliberately breaching his sexual harm prevention order. The breach involved the intentional deletion of his internet browsing history on his iPhone, an act that was scrutinized closely by authorities and the court.

Hughes had previously been subject to a sexual harm prevention order, which is designed to restrict individuals from accessing or seeking out illegal or harmful material, particularly involving children. The order also requires him to cooperate with police in re-registering as a sex offender, a process he attempted to undertake but did not bring his phone with him during the visit. This omission raised suspicions among law enforcement officials.

In February, police officers conducted an unannounced visit to Hughes’s residence on St David’s Road in Old Colwyn. During this visit, Hughes claimed that his iPhone did not retain any browsing history, a statement that was met with skepticism. Despite his assertion, he was unable to provide a convincing explanation for why he continued to use the device if it supposedly lacked any record of his online activity.

Prosecutor Karl Scholz presented evidence indicating that the police examined Hughes’s phone and discovered that it had visited various websites. However, the crucial point was that the browsing history had been deliberately deleted, suggesting an attempt to conceal his online activity. This act was viewed by the court as a calculated and deliberate effort to undermine the restrictions imposed by the sexual harm prevention order.

Judge Rhys Rowlands addressed the court, describing Hughes’s actions as manipulative and deeply concerning. He emphasized that such behavior cast doubt on Hughes’s genuine intentions to reform and address his previous inappropriate and illegal interests, which included seeking out illegal images of children. The judge stated, “Such behaviour is manipulative and worrying,” highlighting the potential risk Hughes posed to the community.

As a result of his actions, Hughes was sentenced to seven months in prison. Despite this, the judge clarified that Hughes’s existing community order would remain in place, underscoring the ongoing supervision and restrictions he must adhere to. Hughes admitted to breaching his sexual harm prevention order and acknowledged that he would need to seek professional advice regarding the use of his phone to minimize the risk of further breaches, whether deliberate or accidental.

This case underscores the importance of strict enforcement of court orders designed to protect vulnerable members of society and the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in ensuring compliance from individuals with a history of harmful behavior.
