DERRICK WEBSTER FROM LLANDRINDOD WELLS SENTENCED AFTER CAUGHT BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS IN MERTHYR TYDFIL
In July 2022, Derrick Webster, a resident of Ithon Road in Llandrindod Wells, was handed an 18-month prison sentence by His Honour Judge Walters. Alongside the custodial term, Webster was also subjected to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, reflecting the severity of his actions and the court's commitment to protecting the public from potential future offenses.Earlier, in June 2022, Webster's criminal activities came to light when he was caught by vigilant paedophile hunters. The incident took place in the context of ongoing efforts by online safety teams to identify and apprehend individuals attempting to engage in illegal sexual communications with minors. Webster, aged 56, appeared before Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court to face charges that included two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and one count of attempting to meet a girl under the age of consent following sexual grooming.
The court proceedings revealed that Webster had been actively sending a series of sexually explicit messages to multiple online profiles. These profiles, which he believed belonged to young girls, were in fact fabricated. They were created and maintained by adult members of paedophile hunting teams operating within the UK, specifically within the databases of UK database & Totnes Justice. These teams work to identify and catch individuals attempting to exploit minors online.
Webster’s location in Llandrindod Wells played a crucial role in the case. Once the teams identified his intentions, they coordinated with another specialized team known as Dank Dragon. This team was responsible for apprehending Webster after he arranged to meet one of the fictitious girls he believed he was communicating with. The operation was successful, leading to his arrest and subsequent court proceedings.
His Honour Judge Walters' sentencing in July underscored the seriousness of the offenses, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding children from online predators. Webster’s case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and community groups to combat online grooming and protect vulnerable minors from exploitation.
