MAN JAILED FOR STRANGLING GIRLFRIEND AFTER VIOLENT DOMESTIC DISPUTE
A man named Derius Campbell, aged 22, was convicted of serious domestic violence offenses and sentenced to over two years in prison.
The court detailed how Campbell strangled his girlfriend after she discovered he had a secret Snapchat account filled with messages from other women.
The incident occurred during an argument, during which he threatened her with a butter knife and took her mobile phone.
When she looked at his phone and found the hidden Snapchat account with messages from other females, violence escalated.
Campbell then assaulted her physically, grabbing her by the throat so tightly that she was gasping for air, and also shoved two fingers down her throat.
Additionally, he left her 'gasping for air' and caused injuries including a cut to her lip and damage to her throat.
Campbell pleaded guilty to charges of intentional strangulation, threatening her with a blade, and breaching a suspended sentence.
The judge, Recorder Anna Vigars KC, addressed his immaturity and background, noting that he had a difficult childhood and previous convictions, including a previous breach of a previous suspended sentence and a conviction for battery against the same woman.
Campbell was sentenced to two years and three months in jail after the judge activated part of his suspended sentence, and he was also found to be working with a gang involved in criminal activities.
The court highlighted his background, including being in care from the age of five, and acknowledged his attempts to better himself despite a troubled past.
