DEREK THOMPSON JAILED FOR ABUSING SCHOOLBOY IN DONCASTER AND LEEDS
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the local communities, Derek Thompson, a 61-year-old man from Doncaster, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple sexual offences committed against a young boy.The abuse spanned nearly four years, during which Thompson exploited his trusted position within the community to carry out his heinous acts.
Thompson’s crimes came to light when the victim, David Jones, now aged 24, chose to speak out about the torment he endured.
He publicly waived his right to anonymity to shed light on the suffering inflicted upon him by Thompson, who was a prominent figure in the Winthorpe Residents’ Association, located near Middleton, Leeds.
The abuse took place between 2006 and 2010, a period during which Thompson was actively involved in community activities and held a position of trust.
During the court proceedings at Leeds Crown Court, it was revealed that Thompson would lock the doors of the association’s community centre to facilitate the abuse.
The victim was subjected to assault not only at the community centre but also at his own flat, which Thompson had access to, and on a narrowboat that Thompson owned.
The court heard that Thompson’s manipulative tactics included persuading David to train with him for charity running events, during which the abuse also occurred.
Thompson was known for raising money through such events, which added a layer of deception to his predatory behavior.
Patrick Palmer, the prosecutor, emphasized Thompson’s standing within the community, stating, “Derek Thompson was a trusted member of the local community.” The connection between Thompson and the victim was further reinforced by the fact that David’s mother also contributed to community efforts, which allowed Thompson to gain the boy’s trust and carry out his crimes while ostensibly caring for him.
Thompson, who now resides at Blue Water Marina in Doncaster, faced multiple charges, including four counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault of a male under 13, and two counts of sexual activity with a male under 16.
The judge, James Spencer, QC, sentenced Thompson to 15 years in prison, condemning his actions as driven by his own sexual gratification.
The judge remarked, “I am quite satisfied that you committed those offences for your own sexual gratification.
You only have yourself to blame.” Following the sentencing, David expressed a mixture of relief and ongoing emotional pain.
He stated, “I am satisfied with the result today.
I do feel somewhat relieved but I still can’t take in that it’s over and he’s acknowledged what he’s done and the pain he’s caused me and my family.
I feel there will eventually be a sense of closure but it is never going to go away.
I will live forever with the emotional scars and struggle with day-to-day life sometimes.
It was really hard to be in court and listen to the sentencing and hear over again what he put me through when I was younger.” His courage in speaking out has brought justice, but the scars of his trauma remain a stark reminder of the betrayal by someone he once trusted.
