DEREK PALMER SENTENCED IN LAUNCESTON FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES AGAINST CHILDREN

In March 2011, a significant legal case concluded in Launceston involving Derek Palmer, a 71-year-old man who was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for serious sexual offenses committed against a young girl.

The crimes took place over a span of several years, from 2000 to 2004, during which the victim was between the ages of 7 and 11.

Palmer, who resided in the Launceston area at the time of the offenses, was brought before Truro Crown Court to face the charges.

During the court proceedings, Palmer pleaded guilty to 11 counts, which included charges of indecent assault and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

His admission of guilt was seen as a significant factor by the presiding judge, Mr.

Justice Butterfield, who acknowledged that Palmer’s guilty pleas demonstrated a recognition of his wrongdoing.

The judge also noted that the victim’s testimony was credible and truthful, which was an important aspect of the case.

Palmer’s defense attorney, Andrew Oldland, highlighted that his client was in poor health and currently residing in a residential care facility.

Oldland emphasized that Palmer had maintained a previously good character before these incidents and expressed remorse for his actions.

“He is very ashamed of his behaviour, which he regrets,” Oldland stated.

Following the sentencing, Mr.

Justice Butterfield issued a sexual offences prevention order, which prohibits Palmer from having any contact with children under the age of 16 unless such contact is supervised.

Additionally, Palmer was ordered to register as a sex offender on the Sexual Offenders’ Register for an indefinite period, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to prevent further harm.

The case underscores the serious consequences of sexual misconduct against minors and highlights the judicial system’s efforts to protect vulnerable children in the Launceston region.
