DEREK MORGAN FROM LLANDUDNO SENTENCED FOR DISTRIBUTING CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN NORTH WALES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Llandudno and the wider North Wales region, Derek Morgan, aged 47, has been sentenced to 32 months in prison after admitting to the distribution and possession of highly disturbing images depicting child abuse. The case was heard at Caernarfon Crown Court, where the court was told that Morgan had engaged in heinous online activities involving the viewing and dissemination of illegal content.According to the court proceedings, Morgan had watched a live broadcast of a young girl being abused by her parents over the internet. This act of viewing was part of a broader pattern of disturbing online behavior. Prosecutor Nicholas Williams revealed that Morgan had posed under a false identity as a female midwife, a deception he used to connect with others and share illicit material. He had distributed numerous images and video clips of children being abused among contacts he had established through various online platforms.
The authorities uncovered more than 2,100 images and videos on two computers seized from Morgan’s residence in Attlee Close, Llandudno, last July. These materials ranged from level two to the most serious level five in terms of severity, and were downloaded over a span of three years, from 2008 to 2011. Morgan had used nine different email addresses to distribute over 125 images and videos, further illustrating the extent of his offending.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Morgan had created a false online persona as a female midwife, which he used to portray himself as someone who would abuse children while at work. This deception led to the arrest of his partner at the time, although she was later released without charge after inquiries. Morgan admitted during police interviews that he had watched a web broadcast of a young girl being abused, and it was also discovered that he had been in contact with her parents online.
Defense lawyer Henry Hills acknowledged Morgan’s remorse and his understanding of the gravity of his actions. He emphasized that Morgan had not gained financially from his offending and expressed hope that his client would accept the consequences. However, the court was clear in its condemnation of Morgan’s actions, emphasizing the seriousness of distributing such images.
In addition to his prison sentence, Morgan will be required to register as a sex offender for life and will be subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order. All computer equipment used in the commission of these crimes will be confiscated and destroyed, ensuring that Morgan’s access to such material is permanently severed. The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and protect vulnerable victims from further harm.
