DEREK HAWKES, TEDDINGTON OFFENDER, RETURNS TO COURT IN RICHMOND

In June 2008, Derek Hawkes, a 47-year-old man from Park Lane, Teddington, appeared in court relating to allegations of violating a court order.

Hawkes, who had previously been convicted of crimes involving an eight-year-old girl in 2000, faced charges for breaching conditions set after his conviction.

Richmond Magistrates' Court heard that while serving his previous sentence, Hawkes shared a cell with another sex offender, David Wake of Lower Mortlake Road.

Upon his release in 2004, Hawkes was explicitly instructed not to contact anyone registered as a sex offender.

On May 30, Hawkes was seen in the company of Wake by Detective Sergeant Long, who is part of Richmond's Operation Jigsaw, the unit overseeing the sex offenders list.

After notifying uniformed police about their presence together, Hawkes was arrested approximately forty minutes later outside his residence, again with Wake.

The bench, chaired by Mary Clarke, accepted jurisdiction over the case and scheduled the hearing for Monday, July 7.

During the hearing, Ms.

Clarke stated, “We have taken into account the three-year duration (between the order being made and the time of the offence) and the events of the afternoon and that it was not you who had contacted David Wake.”
