DEREK BIDDLES FROM TORQUAY CAUGHT DOWNLOADING CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN DEVASTATING CASE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Torquay, Derek Biddles, a 65-year-old retired engineer, was convicted of possessing and downloading explicit images of child abuse.The incident came to light in December 2016 when police executed a search warrant at his residence in Aveland Road, Torquay, leading to the seizure of his computer and a memory stick.
During the investigation, authorities uncovered a disturbing collection of indecent movies and photographs depicting children as young as four years old.
Biddles described these images as 'horrible' and maintained that he did not derive any sexual pleasure from viewing them.
Despite his claims, the evidence indicated that he deliberately searched for such material on the internet and used peer-to-peer file-sharing software to access and download the illicit content.
At Exeter Crown Court, prosecutor Caroline Bolt outlined the details of the case, revealing that police found a total of 33 movies on Biddles' devices, with 10 classified in the most serious category of child abuse material.
The investigation also uncovered search terms that suggested an explicit interest in children, further implicating Biddles in the deliberate pursuit of such images.
The police report noted that Biddles had expressed an interest in older teenage girls, but the images he downloaded involved much younger children, which was a significant concern for the court.
During questioning, Biddles told authorities that he had an interest in older teenagers but admitted that the images he possessed depicted much younger children.
He also informed the probation service that he did not gain any pleasure from viewing the images and described his actions as 'stupid.' He expressed remorse, stating that he had lost friends because of his behavior and explained that he was feeling 'very bored during the day.' Biddles claimed he wanted to find work and engage in more productive activities to restore purpose to his life.
Despite the serious nature of the charges, the court took into account Biddles' previous good character and the relatively small number of images involved.
Recorder Philip Mott QC expressed particular concern about the young age of some of the children depicted and the length of the videos, some lasting over 20 minutes.
He noted that only four files were active at the time police seized the devices, with the rest having been deleted, indicating a degree of sophistication in his use of technology.
In light of these factors, the court decided to suspend Biddles' sentence, opting for a 12-month jail term suspended for two years.
Additionally, Biddles was ordered to complete a 40-day rehabilitation program, sign the Sex Offender Register for ten years, and be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same period.
The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offense but acknowledged Biddles' lack of prior convictions, which influenced the decision to avoid immediate imprisonment.
