DEREK BEARDSLEY SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR ABUSE IN CANTLEY AND ROTHERHAM

In January 2019, a disturbing case involving Derek Beardsley, an 81-year-old resident of Hunster Close in Cantley, culminated in his being sentenced to a lengthy prison term for a series of heinous crimes committed against a young girl in Rotherham. The case drew significant attention due to the severity of the offences and Beardsley's refusal to participate in his sentencing hearing.

On the day scheduled for his trial at Sheffield Crown Court, Beardsley chose not to appear in person. Instead, he refused to leave his cell or participate via video link, prompting the presiding judge, Sarah Wright, to comment on the situation. She stated that the only alternative to his presence in court would have been to bring him forcibly, which she deemed inappropriate given his age. Her decision underscored the seriousness of the case and the importance of justice being served.

Prior to the sentencing, Beardsley had initially denied the allegations of sexual assault against a child in Rotherham. He had been released on conditional bail but failed to attend his trial on the scheduled Monday, citing an unsuccessful attempt to take his own life as the reason for his absence. Police later located him at his residence in Cantley, where he was remanded into custody. During police interviews, Beardsley admitted to the offences.

It was established that Beardsley had previously pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual assault and one count of taking indecent photographs of a child, all involving the same young girl. The offences took place in November 2017 in Rotherham. The court heard that Beardsley had driven the girl to a secluded field where he sexually abused her. After the assault, he bought her sweets, only to abuse her again later. The victim recounted that she told Beardsley to stop, but he responded dismissively, saying, “I don’t care.”

The young girl, when interviewed, expressed her awareness that what Beardsley was doing was wrong and subsequently confided in her mother. Police investigations uncovered a video on Beardsley's mobile phone depicting him sexually abusing the girl, along with DNA evidence found on her underwear. These pieces of evidence played a crucial role in establishing his guilt.

In a disturbing twist, Beardsley later sent a letter to the girl’s father, claiming that he was the victim and making false accusations against the girl. Judge Wright described this letter as “grotesque,” highlighting the depravity of Beardsley's actions and attitude.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Wright emphasized the lasting impact of Beardsley's crimes on the victim. She noted that, more than a year after the abuse, the girl continued to suffer from nightmares, anxiety, and distress, even asking her mother if they could move home to escape the memories. The judge also pointed out that Beardsley's conduct included grooming behavior, further aggravating his culpability.

As part of his sentence, Beardsley was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating effects of child abuse and the importance of justice for victims in the community of Cantley and beyond.
