OFFENDER GETS 10-YEAR EXTENDED SENTENCE FOR CONTACT WITH CHILDREN AND POSSESSION OF EXTREME INDECENT IMAGES
Dean Paul Murphy, described by authorities as a 'devious' paedophile, succeeded in obtaining a job that put him in contact with children despite having prior convictions and legal restrictions in place.
It was revealed during court proceedings that Murphy did not disclose his criminal background when applying for employment.
An off-duty police officer who recognized him at work identified him as a sex offender.
Murphy’s criminal record included convictions for making and possessing indecent images of minors, resulting in a suspended sentence.
He was also under a sexual harm prevention order that barred him from contacting or communicating with children.
Despite these measures, Murphy later admitted that he planned to rape a child and disclosed that gaining access to children was sexually stimulating for him, with an intent to carry out an assault.
Authorities searched his residence and found three mobile phones containing multiple indecent images, including 49 considered the most extreme (Category A).
Murphy stated he did not intend to use the job to access children but referred to contact with minors as a 'bonus.' The court decided to classify him as a dangerous offender, which resulted in an extended sentence of 10 years—comprising five years in prison and five years on licence, with the licence subject to revocation at any time.
Additionally, he was subjected to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order.
