DEAN HALEY SENTENCED IN DUNFERMLINE FOR ASSAULT ON FORMER PARTNER
Dean Haley, aged 30, assaulted a woman in Derran Drive, Cardenden, on September 4th of the previous year, as she was heading to a takeaway with friends. At Dunfermline Sheriff Court last Wednesday, Haley pleaded guilty to the charge of assault, which involved grabbing the woman by her body and pulling her to the ground.
Fiscal depute Sam Johnston explained that the woman, who shares two children aged six and four with Haley, was driving to a takeaway with her friends when she stopped her vehicle. Haley was in the car behind her and approached her vehicle before executing the attack. After the assault, he returned to his car and drove away.
The incident was reported to the police, leading to Haley’s subsequent detention.
His solicitor, Kerr Sneddon, characterized the charge as "relatively minor" and stated that there was no injury to the woman. Sneddon also mentioned that Haley and the woman had a "volatile" relationship, noting, "She’s sworn and shouted at him and pushed him but he’s not called the police."
Sheriff Charles Macnair responded to these comments, saying, "If this was in isolation, I might have satisfied that this could be treated as a minor matter. But this is the fourth offence you’ve committed against your former partner."
The sheriff highlighted Haley’s history of failing to abide by court-ordered conduct, noting that although sentences had been deferred in the past, Haley did not demonstrate good behaviour. He said, "The first time you were; the second time you weren’t. Then you were placed on a community payback order which you proceeded to breach."
Sheriff Macnair emphasized the serious implications of Haley’s actions, stating, "You’re very close to serving a custodial sentence for any offence committed against your former partner."
Ultimately, Haley was sentenced to a community payback order with 18 months’ supervision and 135 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, he was ordered to attend the Positive Relationships groupwork programme.
