DAVID LEACH FROM MIDDLESBROUGH ESCAPES PRISON AFTER SEX OFFENDER CHARGES IN TEESSIDE

In a case that has drawn significant attention in Middlesbrough and the wider Teesside area, David Leach, a known sex offender, was brought before Teesside Crown Court following serious allegations involving a teenage victim. The incident, which occurred on March 19 of the previous year, involved Leach engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old boy whom he met through social media platform Facebook.

Leach, who resides on Jubilee Street in Middlesbrough, initially appeared to offer the young teenager a job at a local bar and even invited him to view the premises. However, instead of following through with this innocent gesture, Leach took the teenager to his home, where the sexual act took place. The court heard that the teenager was reluctant to report the incident to the police, a hesitation influenced by a friend who pressured him into coming forward. Despite this, the teenager later informed authorities that he did not feel forced into the encounter at Leach’s residence, which complicated the case.

During the court proceedings, Leach admitted to the charge of engaging in sexual activity with a child. The 42-year-old was sentenced to a 12-month prison term, but this sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offence during that period. Additionally, he was placed under two years of probation supervision and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years. A lifetime ban from working with children was also imposed, reflecting the court’s strict stance on safeguarding.

Judge Les Spittle emphasized the importance of rehabilitation and ordered Leach to participate in a rigorous community-based internet sex offenders’ treatment programme, consisting of 35 sessions. The judge highlighted that this course requires full cooperation and commitment from Leach, noting that such intensive therapy would not be available within a custodial environment. He urged Leach to seize this opportunity for reform, stating, “That’s a rigorous course and requires 100 per cent response and co-operation from you. The type of course you need would not be available in a custodial setting. This is an opportunity that should be taken.”

Stephen Constantine, representing the defence, argued that the treatment programme was in the best interest of society, stating, “It is very clear that those with expertise in these matters think society will be better served by this course.” The case underscores ongoing concerns about online grooming and the importance of tailored rehabilitation efforts for offenders in the Middlesbrough area and beyond.
