DAVID JONES SENTENCED IN NEWPORT FOR SEXUAL OFFENSE INVOLVING UNDERAGE GIRL

In a case that has shocked the Newport community, David Jones, a 44-year-old resident of Alexandra Road, was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to engaging in unlawful sexual activity with a girl under the age of 16. The incident took place in September, and the court proceedings revealed disturbing details about the events leading up to his arrest.

Judge David Wynn Morgan presided over the case at Cardiff Crown Court and addressed Jones directly, stating that on the night in question, Jones was heavily intoxicated. The judge explained, “You were very drunk. When you returned home and after also smoking cannabis, you began to have sex with this girl.” The judge emphasized that Jones expressed significant shame and embarrassment during the proceedings, and believed that the girl was consenting at the time. Importantly, the court noted that Jones has no prior convictions related to sexual offenses.

Prosecutor David Webster provided further context, recounting that Jones had attended a nightclub in Newport that evening. According to Webster, “Large quantities of alcohol were being consumed and there were certain tensions. A fight broke out involving Jones, who was caught up innocently.” The situation escalated when a group of people, including the underage girl, returned to Jones’s flat. Later, they were unexpectedly disturbed by someone who was “surprised and alarmed to find them having sex.”

During the arrest, Jones claimed that the girl had initiated the sexual advances and that he believed she was consenting. The court heard that Jones showed immediate remorse once confronted and that he ceased the activity when disturbed. It was also highlighted that Jones leads a family-oriented life and is not attracted to young people, with the incident being described as an isolated event.

As part of his sentence, Jones was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years upon his release. Additionally, he was banned from working with children for the rest of his life, reflecting the court’s concern for public safety and the protection of minors.
