DAVID JOHNSON FROM SOUTHPORT SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE DOWNLOADS IN LIVERPOOL CROWN COURT
In a case that has shocked the community of Southport, David Johnson, a 51-year-old resident of Rufford Street, was brought before Liverpool Crown Court to face charges related to the possession and download of highly disturbing and illegal images depicting child sexual abuse.The court proceedings revealed that Johnson had engaged in the online pursuit of these abhorrent materials, which included a total of 505 images and 42 videos, categorized across various levels of severity.
Authorities uncovered that Johnson’s illicit activities extended to searching for web addresses originating from Russia and Germany, countries often associated with the distribution of such illegal content.
The police investigation was initiated after a raid on his home on April 6 of the previous year, during which his computer equipment was seized for forensic analysis.
When questioned about the nature of his online searches, Johnson claimed that he would not encounter images of underage girls regularly, suggesting that such content would only occasionally appear during his browsing sessions.
Despite this, the evidence showed that his search terms included phrases like “nude schoolgirl” and “young, chubby and pre-teen,” indicating a clear interest in underage children.
Prosecutor Chris Taylor outlined the extent of Johnson’s illegal collection, stating that he had downloaded 79 extreme pornographic images, with all but two of these being videos.
Additionally, Johnson possessed 61 computer-generated indecent images of children, which are often manipulated or fabricated to simulate illegal acts.
The court heard that Johnson pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including three counts of downloading indecent images, one count of possessing extreme pornography, and another of possessing prohibited images of children.
Sentencing was handed down by Judge Steven Everett, who emphasized the gravity of Johnson’s actions.
The judge pointed out that the children depicted in these images would likely have suffered lifelong psychological trauma.
He expressed concern that some victims might have been so severely affected that they could have taken their own lives or been discarded after their abuse.
Johnson was sentenced to eight months in prison, but this sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed further offenses within that period.
Additionally, he was ordered to participate in a sex offenders’ rehabilitation program and complete 60 days of community-based activities.
Furthermore, Johnson was subject to a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his access to certain online content and activities, and he was mandated to register as a sex offender for the same duration.
The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of his crimes and the potential danger he poses to society.
Judge Everett addressed Johnson directly, stating that the children in the images would have been left with lasting mental scars.
He remarked, “It is a sad reality some may not now be alive because they have taken their own lives or once abused in this way may well have been sadly disposed of.” The judge urged Johnson to accept responsibility for his actions, acknowledging that while he has medical issues, including a serious heart condition and diabetes, he must confront the reality of his misconduct.
“You knew what you were doing and it is time for you to own up to it,” he said.
The judge also noted that there was a “glimmer of change” in Johnson’s attitude but emphasized the need for greater honesty.
Defence lawyer Rory McCormack described Johnson as “a very ill man,” highlighting his health problems and limited insight into his actions.
McCormack added that Johnson’s health issues, including diabetes, were significant factors in his overall condition, but the court made it clear that the severity of his crimes warranted serious consequences, even with health considerations taken into account.
