DAVID JOHNSON FROM GRANGE-OVER-SANDS FACES CRIMINAL CHARGES FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN CUMBRIA
In March 2017, a 66-year-old man from Grange-over-Sands, named David Charles Cecil Johnson, faced serious criminal charges related to the possession and creation of child abuse images. The case was heard at Carlisle Crown Court, where Johnson admitted to five separate offences involving illegal material depicting minors.Police authorities initiated an investigation after visiting Johnson’s residence in March of the previous year. During the search, law enforcement officials uncovered a disturbing collection of over 200 illicit photographs and videos stored on his computer equipment. These materials included images and footage featuring children as young as three or four years old, with a significant portion classified under Category A, indicating the most severe level of abuse content.
Johnson was charged with three counts of making indecent photographs of a child, one count of possessing such illegal material, and an additional charge of possessing a prohibited image of a child. Despite having no prior criminal record, Johnson explained that his actions stemmed from curiosity, and he expressed remorse for his conduct during the court proceedings.
In sentencing, Judge Tony Lancaster acknowledged Johnson’s lack of previous convictions but emphasized the seriousness of the offences. The judge decided to suspend a 12-month prison sentence for two years, considering the mitigation presented during the hearing. As part of his sentence, Johnson, who resides at Lowther Gardens in Grange-over-Sands, is required to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years and complete a rehabilitation program aimed at addressing his behavior.
Furthermore, Johnson was placed under a sexual harm prevention order that will remain in effect for five years, restricting his activities and monitoring his compliance. Judge Lancaster concluded by remarking on the unfortunate circumstances, stating, “It is sad that at 66 you should find yourself in court facing criminal charges such as these,” highlighting the gravity of the case and the impact of such offences on the community and victims involved.
