DANGEROUS SEX OFFENDER DAVID JOHN ANDREWS SENTENCED TO 27 YEARS IN MAGHABERRY

A notorious and deeply disturbing sex offender from Northern Ireland has been handed a lengthy prison sentence of 27 years. David John Andrews, aged 55, who is currently held at Maghaberry Prison, pleaded guilty to a staggering total of 130 charges related to sexual abuse. These charges encompass attempted rape, threats to kill, and inciting children to engage in sexual activities, involving a total of 47 victims. Among these victims, 46 were minors at the time the crimes occurred, with many of the offenses taking place in England.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that much of Andrews's offending was so heinous and vile that it was described as 'too harrowing and vile to be repeated.' The court also determined that Andrews must serve a minimum of 13 and a half years before becoming eligible for parole. The youngest victim was only eight years old, highlighting the horrifying nature of his crimes. Additionally, there was an attempted rape charge involving a profoundly disabled young woman, further emphasizing the severity of his offenses.

Andrews employed sophisticated online tactics, often engaging in catfishing by posing as a young boy to lure children. He used these manipulative schemes to blackmail victims into performing sexual acts, threatening violence and offering money in exchange for images. He also exploited the victims' images, exchanging them for illegal content. Many of the charges stem from incidents that occurred in 2019 and 2020. Andrews has been in remand for over four years, awaiting trial.

His defense argued that Andrews suffers from complex mental health issues and was self-medicating with cocaine during the commission of these crimes. The presiding judge described Andrews as 'calculated and determined,' emphasizing the 'depths of depravity' involved in his actions. The police have labeled Andrews a 'dangerous and devious paedophile,' responsible for instilling immense fear and trauma among his victims.

Catherine Kierans, head of the Public Prosecution Service’s serious crime unit, underscored that there is no hiding place for offenders like Andrews. She highlighted ongoing police efforts, including searches and arrests targeting online child predators, and urged anyone who feels they have been targeted to come forward.
