FORMER CARETAKER DAVID JERVIS SENTENCED IN BELFAST FOR CHILD ABUSE
In March 2019, a former school caretaker, David Patrick Jervis, expressed his remorse to a man he sexually abused over 30 years earlier. Jervis, who previously worked as a caretaker at St James Primary School in Newtownabbey, apologized directly to his victim, telling him, “I am very, very sorry.”Jervis, aged 74 and residing on the Antrim Road in Newtownabbey, was sentenced to a three-year probation order after admitting to sexually abusing the boy in his office and car. After Judge Patricia Smyth delivered the sentence at Belfast Crown Court, Jervis took the opportunity to apologize to the man, who was just eight years old at the time.
Jervis has a history of offending against children; he previously served time for similar crimes. He admitted to seven additional offences committed between August 1986 and June 1989, which included indecent assaults and acts of gross indecency.
Prosecutor Kate McKay explained that while some Of the charges related to specific incidents, others indicated a pattern of repeated behaviour. She noted that Jervis’s abusive actions came to light after the complainant, now 40, reported the abuse to police, revealing that he was assaulted during rides to football practice in Jervis’s car. The complainant recounted that when he tried to push Jervis’s hand away, Jervis simply laughed off the incident.
Additional abuse was reported to have taken place in Jervis’s office at the school and in the toilets. Ms. McKay added that the victim did not initially speak about the incidents for many years but later confided in his GP, his partner, and his parents.
Following police interviews in October 2015, Jervis initially did not admit guilt but later changed his plea to guilty on the morning of his trial. Gavan Duffy QC, defending Jervis, described the guilty plea as “a vindication” for the victim.
In addition to the probation term, Judge Smyth imposed a Sexual Offences Probation Order lasting five years and prohibited Jervis from working with children.
