OFFENDER JAILED AFTER 14-YEAR SEARCH FOR RAPIST OF ELDERLY WOMAN
The article reports that David Grady, aged 33, was recently jailed for 12 years after previously evading justice for over 13 years. He was convicted of raping an 87-year-old woman in her home in Redcar in December 1989.
The victim, an elderly widow who was using a wheelchair, was attacked after he forced his way into her bungalow just after midnight.
During the assault, Grady, then aged 20, made a statement that he wanted her and proceeded to rape her with a degree of persistence.
The victim was able to give police a detailed description of her attacker, which, along with DNA evidence left at the scene, eventually led to Grady's arrest.
He also admitted to three burglaries committed in Saltburn in January 1995, where he cut himself on broken glass at the scene, leaving blood evidence.
After initial denial, DNA tests linked him to the rape and burglaries.
He was arrested in April 2003 and pleaded guilty to the rape and burglaries.
The judge described the offence as very serious and expressed contempt for Grady, highlighting the impact on the victim who never recovered and died in 1993.
The court sentenced him to 12 years in prison, emphasizing the horror and contempt with which his conduct was viewed.
