DANGEROUS ARBROATH MAN DAVID DOUGLAS ABUSES PARTNER FOR OVER 18 MONTHS IN DUNDEE AND ARBROATH
David Douglas, a 21-year-old resident of Brothock Way in Arbroath, has been brought back to Forfar Sheriff Court to face sentencing after a lengthy period of abusive behavior that spanned more than a year and a half. The court proceedings revealed that Douglas engaged in a sustained campaign of violence and emotional abuse directed at his partner, with incidents occurring both in his hometown of Arbroath and in Dundee.Between March 2021 and October 2022, Douglas's actions included a series of aggressive and harmful acts. He repeatedly used derogatory language towards the woman, aiming to demean and belittle her. His physical assaults involved grabbing her by the body and clothing, pushing her forcefully, and striking her multiple times on the head and body, causing her injury. Witnesses and reports indicated that he also threw furniture at her during these episodes, further escalating the violence.
In addition to physical abuse, Douglas engaged in actions that severely restricted his partner’s freedom and well-being. He compressed her neck, which temporarily restricted her breathing, and prevented her from contacting or spending time with her friends and family, effectively isolating her from her support network. Furthermore, he exerted financial control by repeatedly coercing her into making payments, adding an economic dimension to his abusive behavior.
The court had initially deferred sentencing to allow social workers to prepare a comprehensive report on Douglas’s conduct and background. During the proceedings, Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown expressed concern over the defendant’s apparent minimization of his actions, indicating that Douglas may not fully acknowledge the severity of his behavior. The case underscores the ongoing issues of domestic abuse in the region and highlights the importance of thorough assessments in such cases to ensure appropriate sentencing and intervention.
