DUNBAR MAN DAVID CRAIG CONVICTED FOR SHOCKING CHILD VOYEURISM AND CAMERA SCANDAL

A resident of Dunbar, 49-year-old David Craig, has been found guilty of a series of disturbing crimes involving the invasion of privacy and exploitation of children. The case revealed that Craig had secretly installed a hidden camera within his own home, specifically designed to spy on children while they were undressing. This covert device was discreetly placed behind an air vent in his former residence in Dunbar, allowing him to record footage of children during their overnight stays.

Authorities uncovered the disturbing footage after an incident in February 2022, which ultimately led to Craig’s arrest. The incident occurred when a woman, who had been visiting Craig’s home with her children, discovered the hidden camera. Upon confronting Craig about the device, he reacted violently, striking her with a stool in a fit of anger. The woman promptly reported the assault to the police, which prompted a search of Craig’s residence.

During the police search, investigators found the concealed camera inside a wall cavity facing into a bedroom, confirming the woman’s suspicions. Despite Craig’s denial of the charges, a jury convicted him of four counts of voyeurism and possession of indecent images of children. The court heard testimony from the woman, who explained that she initially believed there were security cameras in common areas of the house. However, her concern grew when she discovered a small portable camera hidden behind an air vent, pointing directly into a bedroom used by children. She described this as “an invasion of their privacy” and a “massive breach of trust.”

In addition to the voyeurism charges, Craig admitted to assaulting the woman during the same incident and to possessing drugs, including cannabis and psilocybin, at his Dunbar home on February 4, 2022. The court established that Craig had operated the hidden equipment to observe three children during private moments between September 2020 and February 2022. Furthermore, he was found to have possessed indecent images of children during this period.

Despite the gravity of his offenses, Craig was not sentenced to prison. Instead, he received a supervision order for three years, was ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid community service, and was mandated to remain at his residence from 7 pm to 7 am for six months. Additionally, he was fitted with an electronic tag, ordered to stay away from the woman involved for 12 months, and required to register as a sex offender for five years. The court also imposed strict conditions, including a prohibition on possessing electronic devices or camera equipment without prior approval and a mandate to avoid causing fear or alarm to others, emphasizing the seriousness of his conduct and the need for ongoing monitoring.
