DAVID BIGG OF POTTERS BAR SENTENCED FOR HISTORIC CHILD SEX ABUSE IN ST ALBANS

In a case that has shocked the community of Potters Bar and the surrounding areas, David Bigg, a resident of Shillitoe Avenue in Potters Bar, has been handed down a prison sentence exceeding nine years for serious historical sexual offenses committed against minors.

Bigg, who was actively involved as a cadet leader with St John Ambulance during the 1960s and 1980s, used his position of trust to prey on vulnerable children under his care. The crimes involved two young victims, with the first being between the ages of 11 and 14, and the second between 11 and 15.

The disturbing details of the case emerged during a court hearing at St Albans Crown Court on July 3. It was revealed that Bigg’s abusive actions took place over an extended period, primarily when the victims were in his direct supervision as cadets. The assaults often occurred when the victims were alone with him, such as during transportation back from meetings or events.

According to court reports, Bigg engaged in sexually inappropriate conduct, including performing sexual acts on himself in front of the first victim. The second victim was coerced into participating in sexual acts with Bigg, further compounding the severity of his crimes.

The victims’ courage in coming forward led to the investigation, which uncovered the extent of Bigg’s misconduct. The first report of abuse was made in 2015, followed by another in 2018, when the second victim disclosed the abuse to police officers. These revelations prompted a thorough investigation that ultimately resulted in Bigg’s conviction and sentencing.
