DAVID BENNETT FROM ASHTON-IN-MAKERFIELD AND BEBINGTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN MERSEYSIDE

In a case that has spanned over three decades, a man from Merseyside, David Bennett, has been sentenced for serious sexual offenses committed against a young girl. Bennett, aged 55 and residing in Bebington, was found guilty of engaging in gross indecency with a child as well as indecent assault. The court proceedings revealed that Bennett had previously been convicted of other historical sexual offenses involving children, highlighting a troubling pattern of behavior.

The abuse took place in the mid-1970s at a residence in Ashton-in-Makerfield, where Bennett was staying as a guest. The victim, who was only seven years old at the time, endured these heinous acts in what should have been a safe environment. Despite the abuse occurring so many years ago, the victim did not come forward until June 2009, when she finally reported the incident to authorities. This delay underscores the importance of encouraging victims to come forward, regardless of how much time has passed.

Detective Constable Paul Clayton commented on the case, stating, “Bennett probably thought he had got away with these offences but his victim found the courage to report him and I am pleased justice has been done. The passage of time is no bar to justice and this case demonstrates that we will investigate all such reports thoroughly, regardless of how long ago they happened.”

He further urged other victims of sexual abuse to come forward, emphasizing that police have specially trained officers ready to support and investigate their claims. The case serves as a reminder that justice can be pursued at any time, and authorities remain committed to protecting victims and holding offenders accountable.
