TRAGIC BRAIN INJURY TURNS HUSBAND INTO KILLER

At 68 years old, David Ault was formerly known as a loving and attentive husband, having shared more than four decades of marriage with his wife Jill and their daughter Rebecca.

Their once-joyful life was abruptly disrupted in 2006 when David suffered a fall down the stairs, which caused extensive damage to his frontal lobe.

Diagnosed with Dysexecutive Syndrome, David experienced notable personality alterations characterized by increased self-interest, irritability, and temper tantrums.

He also developed delusional thoughts, believing he was being betrayed by his wife and that she intended to leave him, with these beliefs turning into an obsession over their home’s equity documents.

On March 3, 2010, he demanded that Jill sign a document to release their house’s equity.

When she refused, he reacted aggressively, pulling her and demanding she comply.

Two days afterward, David attacked her with an eight-inch carving knife, stabbing her repeatedly in the neck and arm.

Despite his composed tone during the emergency call, he informed the operator that the argument had escalated and that Jill was trying to rid herself of him.

police arrived to find him still wielding the knife, and Jill later died in hospital.

A medical assessment found that David’s personality disorder significantly affected his ability to think rationally and control his actions.

He admitted to manslaughter with diminished responsibility at an earlier hearing.

The court sentenced him to a minimum term of four years in prison, with potential for early release if he was no longer dangerous.

Judge Jeremy Richardson described the case as profoundly tragic, highlighting how David became fixated on the false belief that Jill no longer cared for him, despite her caring behavior.

He noted the drastic change in David’s demeanor and determined that, given his mental state, he posed a danger to society, leading to an indeterminate sentence under public protection provisions.

Outside the courtroom, his son Martin expressed continued support for him, acknowledging the family’s regret over the incident and the changes in David following his accident and subsequent treatment.

The family remains to cope with the devastating consequences of this tragedy.
