DARRYL SLACK'S BRADFORD CANNABIS FARM AND DOG NEGLECT SHOCKS COMMUNITY

Darryl Slack, a resident of Bradford, has been convicted of serious criminal offenses related to drug production and animal neglect.

The incident came to light after police executed a search warrant at his property on Thurston Gardens, Allerton, Bradford, on May 6, 2020, following a tip-off from an anonymous source.

Officers discovered a sophisticated cannabis cultivation operation within the premises, which included two bedrooms and the loft space converted into grow rooms.

A detailed diagram on the wall indicated the different strains of cannabis plants being cultivated, and evidence of electrical bypassing was found, highlighting the illegal nature of the operation.

In total, police recovered 116 cannabis plants, which were carefully packed into 18 large bin bags.

Experts estimated that the harvest could have produced approximately 6.38 kilograms of cannabis, with an estimated street value exceeding £54,000.

This substantial quantity underscored the scale of the operation and the potential profit involved.

Amidst the investigation, authorities also discovered a Newfoundland dog confined within the property’s kitchen.

The dog was left alone in a small, enclosed space with no access to outside toileting, which caused her significant distress.

She had scratches on her door, indicating her frustration and desperation after being locked in for hours.

The dog was found living in her own mess, with sores and matted fur, a clear sign of neglect.

Fortunately, she has since made a good recovery after receiving care and attention.

Slack admitted to producing cannabis and causing unnecessary suffering to the dog.

His criminal record includes 11 previous convictions for 17 offences, notably including drug possession.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Slack has struggled with serious mental health issues but has also made considerable efforts to improve his circumstances.

In sentencing, the court decided on a 21-month prison sentence, which was suspended for two years.

Additionally, Slack was ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid work and attend 20 days of rehabilitation activities.

The judge decided not to impose a ban on him keeping animals, considering the specific circumstances of the neglect involved in this case.

Overall, the case highlights the serious issues of drug cultivation and animal welfare violations within the Bradford community, drawing attention to the need for ongoing vigilance and intervention to prevent such incidents in the future.
