DARREN MCINTOSH RELEASED EARLY FROM PRISON IN GALASHIELS SPARKS OUTRAGE AND FEARS OF REOFFENDING

In September 2011, a wave of anger and concern swept through the community of Galashiels following the early release of Darren McIntosh, a convicted sex offender who had previously been branded a 'high risk' to children. McIntosh, aged 19 at the time, had been sentenced to three years in prison in 2009 after being found guilty of sexually assaulting an eight-year-old boy.

His sentence was later extended by an additional 12 months in the previous year, as the Crown argued that the original term was 'unduly lenient' and that McIntosh posed a significant danger of reoffending. Despite these concerns, McIntosh was released from custody after serving only half of his extended sentence, a decision that has caused widespread distress among his victim’s family and local politicians alike.

The young victim’s mother was too overwhelmed to comment publicly last night, but a family member expressed their outrage, questioning the justice system’s decision. They stated, 'How can a monster like McIntosh be released just a year after a court deemed his original three-year sentence too lenient and identified him as a high risk to children? Having him back on the streets is unthinkable. No child is safe.'

They further criticized the justice system, saying, 'It’s not the prison service’s fault, but the inadequate justice system that allows paedophiles to be released early. McIntosh shows no remorse or lessons learned from his actions. This is a total outrage. Where is the justice for the victim and his family?'

McIntosh’s crime involved luring the young boy from a garden in Galashiels, located in Roxburghshire, into nearby woodland where he subjected him to stripping, blindfolding, and sexual abuse. The details of the assault have left a lasting scar on the community, and many are now questioning the decision to release him so prematurely.

Politicians have also voiced their concerns, insisting that McIntosh should remain incarcerated until it can be conclusively proven that he no longer poses a threat to children. James Kelly MSP, the Scottish Labour’s shadow justice spokesman, commented, 'This decision undermines public confidence in the justice system. Dangerous individuals like Darren McIntosh should serve appropriate sentences to ensure community safety.'

Similarly, John Lamont, the Scottish Tory justice spokesman, expressed his dismay, stating, 'The public will be sickened to learn that predatory paedophiles can serve only half their sentences. No one should be released if they still pose a danger.'

Adding to the community’s fears, Margaret Ann Cumming, whose eight-year-old son Mark was murdered by a paedophile, warned that McIntosh could easily reoffend. She emphasized the danger, saying, 'If a paedophile can abduct, strip, blindfold, and sexually abuse a child, he is capable of anything. McIntosh is another sex offender rewarded with early release, and he is clearly still a danger.'

Sources from Polmont Young Offenders Institution, near Falkirk, revealed that McIntosh had been engaging in disturbing behavior while incarcerated. They described him as having been 'living his dream' behind bars, stalking younger inmates and leaving love notes under their cell doors. One source noted, 'McIntosh developed an obsession with singer Justin Bieber, constantly talking about him and posting posters of him in his cell. His attraction was purely physical, not musical.'

Furthermore, the source claimed that McIntosh had been targeting the youngest inmates, attempting to stalk and contact them sexually. 'He would pick out the younger lads and start stalking them, even leaving love notes. No one can believe he’s getting out so soon. He remains a danger to the public and shows no remorse for his crimes.'

Back in 2008, during his pre-trial detention, reports indicated that taxpayers were paying approximately £1,000 a day to house McIntosh in a luxurious country residence. Instead of being held in Polmont on remand, he was living in a four-bedroom farmhouse in Dumfriesshire, attended by seven carers, and taken on trips for mountain biking, skating, and ten-pin bowling, highlighting the stark contrast between his incarceration and the typical prison environment.
