WATER ORTON FIREMAN DARREN MANSELL JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN WARWICKSHIRE
In October 1999, a serious case involving a fireman from the West Midlands has come to light, highlighting the disturbing issue of internet child abuse images. Darren Mansell, aged 34 and residing in Water Orton, was sentenced to nine months in prison by a judge at Warwick Crown Court after admitting to multiple charges related to indecent images of children.Detectives uncovered Mansell's illicit activities through an investigation into his internet usage. It was revealed that he was using a computer stored at his grandmother's residence in North Warwickshire. During a police raid on the property, authorities seized a computer that contained an extensive collection of pornographic material. The content included numerous images and texts depicting sexual acts involving young girls, which was deemed highly disturbing and illegal.
When questioned by officers, Mansell, who is married, claimed that he had accidentally come across a few indecent photographs of children and had subsequently deleted them. However, the evidence collected painted a different picture, indicating a pattern of viewing and distributing such material.
His defense lawyer, Stephen Ridley, argued that Mansell did not fully comprehend the severity of the images, suggesting that he did not consider them to be explicit child abuse pictures. Ridley also pointed out that a jail sentence could jeopardize Mansell’s employment, implying potential consequences for his livelihood.
Despite these arguments, Judge James Pyke emphasized the gravity of the offense. He sentenced Mansell to nine months in prison and ordered that he must register as a sex offender with the police for a period of ten years following his release. The judge underscored the seriousness of such crimes, stating, “This kind of traffic depends on the sexual abuse and exploitation of children and young people, and we remain of the opinion that offenses of this kind are so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified.”
