DUNDEE MAN JAILED FOR THREATENING TERMINALLY-ILL MOTHER WITH KNIVES
A man named Darren Airlie, aged 24, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for threatening his terminally-ill mother and elderly grandmother with knives.According to court reports, Airlie flew into a rage at his shared home in Arklay Street after being upset over a family matter he was not informed about.
Sheriff Richard Davidson stated that Airlie had "lost the plot" and described him as "not fit for normal society" during sentencing.
The incident involved Airlie entering the living room and turning up loud music when asked to lower it, then insulting his mother Jennifer, aged 45, by telling her to "hurry up and die" following her diagnosis with throat and lung cancer.
He subsequently retrieved two knives, one with a 10-inch blade, and threatened his mother with the longer one, saying it was "for her." When his grandmother tried to intervene, he directed abuse towards her as well.
The court heard that Airlie, who has 12 previous convictions for breaching bail conditions, continued to act aggressively, kicking over furniture and threatening violence.
He also violated bail conditions by visiting his grandmother's address shortly after being released, which led to his re-arrest.
The judge emphasized the seriousness of his threats and described his actions as "dehumanising" and indicative of his unfitness for normal society, warning that he was likely to offend again if released.
