DANIEL OWENS FROM PONTARDDULAIS SENTENCED IN SWANSEA FOR REPEATED SEX OFFENCES AND ONLINE PREDATORY BEHAVIOR
Daniel Owens, a resident of Pontarddulais, has been convicted and sentenced for a series of disturbing sexual offences involving online predation and breaches of court orders. The case was heard at Swansea Crown Court, where the court was informed that Owens had a long history of disregarding legal restrictions designed to prevent him from reoffending.Owens, 29 years old, had previously been subjected to multiple court orders aimed at curbing his inappropriate behavior. Despite these measures, he continued to breach the terms of his sexual harm prevention order, which was initially imposed in 2016 following a conviction for sexual assault. His repeated violations demonstrated a troubling pattern of defiance and a lack of remorse, leading the presiding judge, Judge Paul Thomas KC, to describe him as “undeterrable.”
The latest incident involved Owens attempting to contact a person he believed was a 13-year-old girl through an online messaging platform. The court revealed that on October 6, Owens engaged with what he thought was a young girl’s account, which was actually a decoy operated by authorities. His profile on the platform read: “Here to have some fun and spread my seed,” and included a topless photograph of himself, indicating his intent to attract a minor for sexual purposes.
Prosecutor Regan Walters detailed that Owens requested the decoy to continue their conversation on more private messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Snapchat. Despite being told that the girl was only 13, Owens persisted in sending his phone number and asked her to message him on WhatsApp. The court heard that Owens made three video calls and one voice call to the decoy in an apparent attempt to verify her age and identity.
As the conversation progressed, Owens’ language became increasingly sexual. He asked, “Would you like to see it though,” and sent a graphic image of his genitals. He also solicited explicit images from the decoy and expressed a desire to show her himself ejaculating, further demonstrating his predatory intent.
Following these actions, Owens was reported to the police. On November 1, officers from South Wales Police attended his residence in Pontarddulais, where they arrested him. During the search, they seized his mobile phone, laptop, PlayStation console, and a telescopic baton. Owens admitted that he was the sole user of the devices and claimed he was unaware that possessing a telescopic baton was illegal.
The police investigation revealed that Owens was a registered sex offender, and he had been subject to a sexual harm prevention order since 2016. His latest actions led to charges of attempted sexual communication with a child, sending a sexually explicit image to cause alarm or distress, breaching the court order, and possessing an offensive weapon in a private place.
In court, Owens pleaded guilty to all charges. Judge Paul Thomas KC sentenced him to 18 months in prison, with an additional two-year extended licence period. The judge expressed his concern about Owens’ persistent offending, stating, “He’s undeterrable isn’t he? He continues to commit offences.”
As part of his sentence, Owens is required to register as a sex offender indefinitely, reflecting the seriousness of his violations and the ongoing risk he poses to the community in Pontarddulais and beyond.
