DANIEL O’DONNELL PRENTON RAPE CASE SHOCKS BIRKENHEAD AND LIVERPOOL
In a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through the communities of Birkenhead and Prenton, a 16-year-old boy named Daniel O’Donnell was convicted of a heinous sexual assault that took place late at night on August 18, 2004. The assault occurred as the young girl, also 16, was walking home alone after an evening out with friends, unaware that she was being stalked by her attacker.According to court proceedings at Liverpool Crown Court, O’Donnell approached the girl around 2 a.m. in a street within Birkenhead. The prosecution, led by Trevor Parry-Jones, detailed how O’Donnell had previously interacted with her friends earlier that evening. He initially asked her for a cigarette, but she, having consumed two bottles of alcopops, responded that she did not have any and continued on her way. However, O’Donnell did not let her go.
Instead, he began following her, shouting and calling out her name. He introduced himself by the nickname “Scouse” and inquired about her destination. The situation quickly escalated when O’Donnell pulled her toward him, kissed her, and when she attempted to walk away, he persisted in following her. The court heard that he then grabbed her around the waist, but she managed to pull free. Despite her efforts to escape, O’Donnell pushed her against a nearby post, and then, in a further act of assault, asked her for sex.
The girl, visibly distressed, told him “No,” but O’Donnell held her by the arms, pushed her into a bush, and then onto the ground. She was described as being terrified and physically hurt during the attack. She attempted to scream for help, but O’Donnell covered her mouth with his hand to silence her. The court was also informed that a nearby couple, living on Hollybank Road, heard the commotion and believed she was being beaten. They came outside to investigate, only to find O’Donnell fleeing the scene with her bag.
When the couple found the girl, she was pleading for her belongings to be returned and was asking for her asthma inhaler, which had been taken during the assault. The victim’s distress was compounded by the fact that she was left traumatized and in need of immediate assistance.
O’Donnell was eventually apprehended after one of the girl’s friends recognized him in the town centre and reported him to the authorities. His arrest marked the culmination of a police investigation into the incident.
During the court hearing, O’Donnell’s defense lawyer, Stuart Driver, acknowledged that his client had pleaded guilty to the charge of rape at the earliest opportunity, indicating remorse or acceptance of responsibility. However, the severity of the crime warranted a strict sentence.
Judge William George sentenced Daniel O’Donnell to four and a half years of detention in a secure facility. Additionally, he ordered O’Donnell to register as a sex offender for life and prohibited him from working with children in any capacity. The judge emphasized the profound and traumatic impact the assault must have had on the victim, underscoring the seriousness of the offense and the need for justice to be served in this case.
