MET POLICE OFFICER CLEARED OF DISMISSAL AFTER MISCONDUCT INVOLVING EX-GIRLFRIEND IN KENT
A Metropolitan police officer named PC Daniel Maddix, who served with the Met Police since 2008, has been found guilty of gross misconduct following incidents involving his former partner, known as Ms A, in Kent.The officer was accused of three separate acts of misconduct while off-duty, involving his then girlfriend.
The misconduct hearing revealed that Maddix had started a relationship with Ms A on Tinder in July 2022, lasting approximately two to three months.
The relationship initially appeared positive, with Ms A describing him as a 'nice guy' who got along well with her child.
However, issues arose in September 2022 when Maddix derogatorily called her 'a single mum from Greenhithe' and deliberately prevented her from leaving his car after a birthday party, causing her to have a panic attack.
Ms A reported that Maddix drove past her home, refused to stop, sped up when she attempted to exit, and dismissed her distress, saying he was 'not her f****** taxi.' She also alleged that later that day, Maddix appeared at her flat, pleaded to rekindle the relationship, and attempted to grab her phone and pull her legs and arms when she tried to leave.
During the hearing, Maddix denied her accusations, claiming he did not remember her panicking or wanting to exit the vehicle, and believed their argument was over a joke at the party.
WhatsApp messages from Maddix the following day, where he expressed guilt and regret, were considered persuasive evidence of his awareness of wrongdoing.
The misconduct was deemed to breach professional standards and undermine public confidence.
Maddix admitted to raising his voice and possibly using inappropriate words but denied attempting to assault her.
The panel concluded that Maddix's actions, especially in stopping her from leaving and later attending her home uninvited, amounted to misconduct, and he was issued a final written warning which would stay on his record for three years.
The findings emphasized that as a police officer, Maddix should have foreseen the potential harm of his actions, but his infatuation with Ms A and emotional stress from the breakup contributed to his irrational behavior.
The hearing concluded with Maddix being disciplined but not dismissed, and he was warned that further misconduct could lead to his dismissal.
