EX-BOXER JAILED FOR VIOLENT ASSAULT AND RACIAL ABUSE IN BRISTOL
A boxer named Daniel Gwilym has been sentenced to prison after a series of violent offences. He proposed to his girlfriend Zoe Walker in front of friends at a Bristol nightclub.
However, later that night, while intoxicated, Gwilym assaulted her, beating her until she lost consciousness.
This incident occurred just hours after he had proposed marriage, turning what was meant to be a romantic gesture into a terrifying episode of domestic violence.
Gwilym, a former professional boxer, also attacked and racially abused a taxi driver on his way home.
During this confrontation, he mocked the driver with taunts and mock sparring, repeatedly asking, "Do you know who I am?".
The court heard that Gwilym had recently split from his wife and had been drinking vodka before the assault.
He turned on Zoe after they arrived home, punching her repeatedly in the back of the head as she lay in bed, causing her to black out.
Gwilym later told police he had a longstanding problem with alcohol.
His criminal history includes previous convictions for biting off a man's ear in a wine bar and stabbing a friend with scissors.
He was convicted of racially aggravated common assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, receiving a sentence of four-and-a-half years in prison.
The sentence was later reduced to four years on appeal by Lord Justice Hamblen, who stated that while alcohol may have triggered his violence, it was not to blame for his aggressive and controlling behavior.
The court emphasized the seriousness of his offences, which involved unprovoked racist attacks and domestic violence against his partner.
