DANIEL EVERITT: DEVON SEX OFFENDER FROM TOTNES AND EXETER CAUGHT IN FACEBOOK AND IMAGE SCANDAL

In a recent development in the ongoing efforts to monitor and control sex offenders in Devon, Daniel Everitt, a 26-year-old man with a troubling criminal history, has once again found himself at the center of legal proceedings. Originally from Totnes, Everitt has now been residing in Exeter under a new alias, Dan Carter, as part of his attempt to evade detection. However, his past and recent actions have brought him back into the spotlight.

According to court records, Everitt was involved in a disturbing incident where he used his dog’s name, Basil, to create a clandestine Facebook page. This act was part of a series of violations of the strict conditions imposed on him due to his previous offenses. The court heard that Everitt, who is under a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO), had violated the terms twice by failing to inform authorities about acquiring new mobile phones, which is a direct breach of the restrictions placed upon him.

His use of the internet and mobile devices is closely monitored by law enforcement, and any breach is taken very seriously. The court was informed that Everitt’s latest violations could lead to imprisonment, as he has already been warned that any future infractions would result in jail time. During the hearing at Exeter Crown Court, Recorder Mr. Ignatius Hughes emphasized the gravity of his breaches, stating that Everitt had been ordered to adhere to the SOPO, now renamed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which is set to remain in effect for another nine years.

Prosecutor Miss Janice Eagles detailed the background of Everitt’s criminal behavior. She explained that he was initially subjected to the SOPO after engaging in online contact with a girl and persuading her to send him indecent images. His first breach involved creating multiple Facebook accounts under different names, including that of his dog Basil, to circumvent restrictions. The latest violations involved him obtaining and using a mobile phone equipped with a camera—devices he was required to report to the police but failed to do so.

Further investigations revealed that Everitt was seen taking photographs of trucks passing beneath a motorway bridge in Devon. He admitted to police that he intended to sell these images to the haulage companies that owned the vehicles, raising concerns about his ongoing inappropriate behavior and potential for further criminal activity.

In a separate but related case from February 2014, Everitt faced charges for soliciting explicit images from a 16-year-old girl. Court records show that he had a prior caution for engaging in sexual activity with a 14-year-old when he was 20. During that incident, he persuaded the young woman to send him nude photographs via Facebook, which he kept on his computer. The court heard that Everitt had an unhealthy and persistent interest in underage girls, prompting the judge to sentence him to ten months in jail, suspended for two years, and to order him to undergo a sex offenders’ treatment program.

Judge Francis Gilbert, QC, emphasized the seriousness of Everitt’s actions, noting his previous criminal record and the danger posed by his continued behavior. He also mandated that Everitt sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for ten years and adhere to the terms of the Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which allows police to monitor his internet activity closely. The judge warned Everitt that if he reoffends, he would face immediate imprisonment, underscoring the court’s zero-tolerance stance on such violations.

Overall, the case highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in managing sex offenders and preventing recidivism. Daniel Everitt’s case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of strict supervision and the potential consequences of breaching legal restrictions designed to protect the public, especially vulnerable minors in Devon and beyond.
