DANIEL DAVEY OF BRADFORD ON AVON AND CHIPPENHAM SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE AND DIES IN PRISON NEAR BICESTER

In a tragic and disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Bradford on Avon and Chippenham, Daniel Davey, a 22-year-old man, died in custody at HMP Bullingdon in Oxfordshire just weeks after being sentenced for heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of a young boy.

Davey was convicted of multiple counts of child sexual abuse, specifically targeting a boy who was only five and six years old at the time of the offenses. The abuse spanned an 18-month period from 2015 to 2016, during which he assaulted the child on at least six separate occasions. The court heard that the abuse came to light after the young victim confided in his mother, expressing a desire to tell her “something dirty.”

Following this disclosure, the child's mother contacted the police, leading to an investigation that uncovered disturbing evidence. Police found DNA evidence linking Davey to the child's underwear, confirming his involvement in the abuse. Additionally, authorities discovered an image on Davey’s computer depicting a man sexually abusing a child approximately 13 years old. When questioned, Davey claimed that he had received the image as a joke from someone else and that he had disposed of his computer before his arrest.

At the time of the crimes, Davey was residing and working in Chippenham, but he was originally from Bradford on Avon. His criminal activities were further corroborated by a witness who saw an image on Davey’s computer of a man performing oral sex on a child. Despite denying the charges, a jury found him guilty of the sexual offenses.

On December 1, 2017, Davey was sentenced at Swindon Crown Court to six and a half years in prison. The sentence also included a lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Order, mandatory registration as a sex offender, and a restraining order to protect the victim. The court’s decision was based on the severity and repeated nature of the abuse, which had taken place while he was living in Chippenham.

His incarceration was short-lived, as he was found dead at HMP Bullingdon in Oxfordshire on January 12, 2018. The Ministry of Justice confirmed that his death would be subject to an investigation by the Prison Service Ombudsman. An inquest into his death was opened in Oxford earlier this week and has been adjourned to a later date for further proceedings.

HMP Bullingdon, located near Bicester, is a resettlement prison housing approximately 1,109 adult and young adult inmates. The circumstances surrounding Davey’s death are now under review, and authorities are awaiting the outcome of the investigation to determine the cause of his death. The case has garnered significant media attention, highlighting the tragic end of a man convicted of some of the most serious crimes involving a child in the communities of Bradford on Avon and Chippenham.
