DAMIEN WALTERS FROM BROCKLEY AND DEPTFORD JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON CHILDREN

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the local communities of Brockley and Deptford, Damien Walters, a 32-year-old man residing on St Asaph Road, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison following his conviction on multiple counts of indecent assault. The sentencing took place at Woolwich Crown Court on June 27, after a jury found Walters guilty of four separate charges related to sexual misconduct involving children.

The case came to light after Metropolitan Police detectives received reports from three women who alleged that Walters had assaulted them during their childhoods in the Deptford area. These assaults reportedly occurred over a span of several years, specifically between 1995 and 2000. One of the victims, who was only six or seven years old at the time, recounted to officers that Walters, who was just 13 years old during the incidents, had subjected her to multiple sexual assaults on different occasions. Her testimony highlighted the disturbing nature of the abuse and the vulnerability of young victims targeted by a peer.

Detective Constable Gary Castle expressed his commendation for the victims' bravery in coming forward after many years. He emphasized the emotional and psychological challenges faced by those who relive traumatic events from their childhoods. Detective Castle stated, “I commend the victims for coming forward. All three victims were children at the time and have found it challenging to come forward, to relive the events of their attack from many years ago.”

He further commented on Walters' apparent reliance on the victims' youth and the assumption that their claims would not be believed, saying, “Walters relied on the fact that these victims were young when he assaulted them and that they would not be believed. He was clearly mistaken.”

During the trial, Walters was acquitted of one count of rape, and the jury was unable to reach a verdict on a second count of rape, leaving that case unresolved. Despite this, the court's decision to imprison Walters for the indecent assault charges marks a significant step in addressing the long-standing abuse allegations and delivering justice for the victims involved.
