PERVERT FILMED WOMEN GOING TO THE TOILET
Community outrage remains high after Christopher Smith, a man accused of secretly filming individuals during private moments, was released without jail time.Victims have expressed feeling both upset and betrayed, citing that Smith, who owns a garden pool and allegedly lured victims to his home, installed cameras upstairs to capture them in compromising situations.
Smith, a retired decorator from Rochford, now features on the sex offenders register but did not face prison.
A representative speaking on behalf of the victims condemned the outcome, stating, “It is appalling that Chris was able to walk away without a custodial sentence.
The fact that he is not in prison has left the victims feeling devastated, disillusioned, and abandoned by the justice system.
They believe true justice has yet to be achieved in this case.” In October of last year, Smith admitted guilt to three voyeurism charges at Basildon Magistrates’ Court, relating to three women, including a minor.
He was caught after a woman found a hidden camera, activated it, and viewed footage of two adult women using the toilet and all three women changing clothes.
Despite a magistrates’ sentence of 16 weeks, Smith appealed, and on the same day, he was released on bail.
His sentence was later upgraded at Basildon Crown Court to six months’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months.
Conditions include 200 hours of community service, up to 50 days of rehabilitation, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and seven years on the sex offenders register.
Victims’ representatives have criticised the sentence, saying, “The sentence does not reflect the long-term mental damage and torment that the victims have suffered, and will now continue to suffer.
It has been a nightmare.” Since the incident, one of the victims suffers sleepless nights, plagued by bad dreams.
“Christopher Smith is free to walk the streets at will whilst the victims have to attempt to rebuild the lives that he has shattered,” their representative said.
“We want to make people aware of what he has done.”
