CRAIG WIGHT KILLINGWORTH PAEDOPHILE SENTENCED FOR RAPE OF CHILD AFTER FAMILY PRESSURE
In February 2021, a disturbing case emerged from Killingworth involving a young girl who endured a series of heinous sexual assaults by Craig Wight. The victim, a vulnerable child, initially attempted to report her abuse, believing that her ordeal might finally come to an end. However, her family members, instead of supporting her, exerted pressure on her to withdraw her allegations, claiming it was in her best interest to do so.Despite her initial courage in coming forward, the girl was persuaded by her family to recant her accusations. This decision, driven by familial influence, proved to be a grave mistake, as Wight’s abuse did not cease. Instead, it escalated into even more severe acts of sexual violence. Over the following months, Wight subjected her to multiple assaults, including at least four or five instances of rape, which involved violent and painful attacks that left lasting trauma.
Craig Wight, aged 43 and residing at Hadrian Court in Killingworth, North Tyneside, was eventually brought to justice at Newcastle Crown Court. The court heard that Wight had groomed the young girl by manipulating her emotionally, telling her he loved her and discussing the possibility of their relationship developing further once she turned 16. His actions demonstrated a calculated attempt to exploit her vulnerability and manipulate her into believing there was a genuine emotional connection.
Judge Stephen Earl, presiding over the case, described Wight’s conduct as “appalling” and condemned the way the victim was pressured into dropping her initial, less serious allegations. The judge emphasized that the subsequent abuse was far more serious and reprehensible, labeling it “abhorrent.” In his sentencing remarks, Judge Earl highlighted the disturbing nature of Wight’s behavior, stating, “He repeatedly told her he loved her and spoke about how the relationship could develop more when she got to 16. He took advantage of her vulnerability. This is not love; this is a form of control. You don’t love someone when you are 40-odd and they are a child and you are raping them.”
The court acknowledged the bravery of the young girl for reporting her abuse, despite the failures of the adults around her. Judge Earl paid tribute to her courage, describing it as “an amazing testament” that she had the strength to come forward. He also noted the profound impact of her experience, stating, “She has been failed by the adults in her life. She has felt isolated, out of place, vulnerable, emotional, a child unable to cope. These are phrases that burn themselves into your consciousness when you read them.”
Wight pleaded guilty to 18 sex offences, including three counts of rape, although the court established that he raped her “at least four or five times.” The prosecution outlined the extent of his predatory behavior, which involved grooming and multiple assaults over a period of time. Judge Earl sentenced Wight to 15 years in prison, with the understanding that he would serve two-thirds of that term before being eligible for parole. Additionally, Wight was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was subject to a sexual harm prevention order.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Earl expressed horror at Wight’s callousness, stating, “You had a clear warning when she made and retracted, through pressure, her first complaint. I can only express horror for the way you have callously acted towards her.” The judge also pointed out that there was “very little mitigation” in Wight’s favor, underscoring the gravity of his crimes and the need for a strong punitive response to protect the community and prevent further harm.
