THORNABY PAEDOPHILE CRAIG SIDGEWICK SPARED JAIL DESPITE CHILD IMAGE HORROR
In a case that has shocked the community of Thornaby, Craig Sidgewick, a man with a disturbing history of viewing and downloading indecent images of children, was recently spared immediate imprisonment despite the severity of his crimes.The court proceedings revealed that Sidgewick had been involved in this illicit activity for nearly twenty years, highlighting a long-standing pattern of disturbing behavior.
On a Friday at Teesside Crown Court, Sidgewick pleaded guilty to three charges related to the possession and distribution of indecent images of children.
The court was informed that he had downloaded over 2,000 such images, with a significant portion—specifically 481 images—classified as the most severe category of child exploitation material.
These images were collected over an extended period, from 1999 to 2017, indicating a persistent engagement with this illegal activity.
The prosecution, led by Jenny Haigh, detailed the circumstances surrounding Sidgewick’s arrest.
When police officers apprehended him at his residence on Salisbury Street in Thornaby on June 20 of the previous year, he was candid about his methods.
Sidgewick admitted to using peer-to-peer sharing networks to obtain the illicit content, which included images of children in extremely vulnerable situations.
During the police interview, Sidgewick made disturbing comments about the children depicted in the images.
He described 13-year-old girls as “little flirts,” revealing a troubling perception of underage girls.
The court heard that the images involved very young children, with some as young as five or six years old, and others as young as 12 to 18 months.
The severity of the material was underscored by the fact that over 200 hours of footage depicting children being abused was found in his possession.
In his own words, Sidgewick told officers that he was only interested in viewing older children, claiming that “the younger ones didn’t interest me” and that he was “not into rape.” He further justified his actions by stating that 13 to 14-year-olds were “little flirts,” revealing a disturbing minimization of the harm caused to the victims.
Despite the gravity of his offenses, the court took into account mitigating factors, including Sidgewick’s assistance to his father and his history as a victim of assault.
Recorder Andrew Sutcliffe QC sentenced Sidgewick to 20 months in prison, but the sentence was suspended for two years.
Additionally, he was ordered to complete 30 days of rehabilitation, emphasizing the court’s attempt to balance punishment with the potential for reform.
