CRAIG RAFFERTY FROM WHITSTABLE AND YALDING JAILED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD SEX OFFENCES

In October 2014, a disturbing case unfolded involving Craig Rafferty, a man with ties to Whitstable and Yalding, who was convicted of heinous sexual offenses against a child. Rafferty, a former publican known for running the Fountain Public House in Whitstable, faced a series of grave allegations that ultimately led to his imprisonment.

Following his conviction, Rafferty's health took a severe turn when he suffered a massive heart attack within hours of the verdict. The incident was so critical that he experienced cardiac arrest three times, necessitating urgent medical intervention. He was swiftly transferred to a hospital where doctors placed him in an induced coma for two weeks, fighting tirelessly to save his life. This medical emergency underscored the gravity of his condition and the seriousness of his health issues.

Now, after a period of recovery, the 43-year-old Rafferty was brought back to Canterbury Crown Court to face the consequences of his actions, both in the eyes of the law and in the moral judgment of society. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of multiple counts of sexual abuse. The court heard that Rafferty subjected his young victim to what was described as “the worst possible cruelty of sexual abuse,” leaving a lasting scar on the child's life.

During the trial, Rafferty, who also owned a caravan park at one point, was visibly emotional as prosecutor Simon Taylor detailed the extent of his historic offenses. However, the judge dismissed Rafferty’s tears as “just crocodile tears,” emphasizing that the defendant showed “no shame or remorse” for his actions.

Jurors convicted Rafferty on seven counts of sexual abuse, with incidents taking place across various locations in Kent, including Ashford, Seasalter, and Tankerton. The victim provided harrowing testimony, describing how Rafferty would “rub against me like I was a woman” and would ignore the child's tears of distress. The court was told that Rafferty’s actions left the young victim feeling disgusted, ashamed, and dehumanized, as he was treated as an object for Rafferty’s sexual gratification through threats and assaults.

Judge James O’Mahony delivered a stern sentence, condemning Rafferty’s conduct as a “regime of cruel abuse” that robbed the child of his innocence. The judge stated, “You carried out every possible form of sexual abuse imaginable, leaving your victim feeling disgusted and being treated like an object for your sexual gratification by threatening him and assaulting him. This was a regime of cruel abuse, and you robbed him of his childhood. He was left feeling ashamed and dirty, and you have shown not one shred of remorse.”

Rafferty’s defense lawyer, John O’Higgins, addressed the court, revealing that after the jury’s verdict, Rafferty was struck by a serious health crisis. He explained that Rafferty had suffered a heart attack in prison, during which his heart failed three times, placing his survival in jeopardy. The severity of his condition was such that he was placed in an induced coma for two weeks.

O’Higgins further stated that Rafferty now requires potent medication to manage his ongoing heart problems, which have also impacted his memory. He suggested that Rafferty’s suffering might be viewed as a form of “divine punishment,” given the gravity of his crimes and the subsequent health consequences he faced.

In conclusion, Rafferty’s case highlights the devastating impact of his actions on his young victim and underscores the importance of justice in cases of child abuse. His health crisis following the trial adds a tragic dimension to an already grave story, leaving many to reflect on the profound consequences of his misconduct.
