CRAIG PEARSON SENTENCED FOR ABUSE IN DURHAM AND HOUTHON, NEWCASTLE
Craig Pearson, a 49-year-old man residing on Ewe Hill Terrace in Houghton, faced a significant legal judgment after a lengthy trial at Newcastle Crown Court.Although Pearson initially denied seven counts of indecent assault, a jury convicted him of these charges earlier this year, acknowledging the serious nature of his misconduct.
The sentencing took place on a Friday morning, during which the victim, who chose to give her testimony in the witness box, expressed her anguish directly to Pearson.
She stated publicly, "I hate what you have done.
I hate you," underscoring the profound emotional scars left by his actions.
The woman described her ordeal, implicating Pearson in behaviors that have inflicted lifelong psychological trauma.
Her statement emphasized that the effects of her abuse will endure for the rest of her life, highlighting the lasting damage caused.
Following her testimony, Mr.
Recorder Tony Hawks delivered the sentence, sentencing Pearson to six years in prison.
In addition to his incarceration, Pearson is required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life and to comply with a lifelong sexual harm prevention order.
The judge addressed the court, asserting that sexual offences involving children produce "catastrophic psychological harm"—a statement that resonated deeply given the circumstances of the case.
The judge also referenced the victim's personal statement, describing it as "very brave and moving," which detailed the profound impact that Pearson's abuse has had on her life.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Pearson, who was married during the time of the offending and is also a father, has ongoing health issues.
Importantly, this case marked his first involvement with the criminal justice system in terms of incarceration, although he has a previous conviction from many years prior for a different type of offence.
Defence attorney Sue Hirst noted that Pearson maintains his innocence regarding these allegations.
She pointed out that he has only one previous conviction, which was unrelated and occurred over a long period ago.
Hirst emphasized that Pearson continues to deny the charges and predicted that serving a custodial sentence would be particularly challenging for him.
Following the conclusion of the hearing, Detective Constable Lyndsey Allen commented on the case, saying, "The victim has suffered the most awful abuse that no child should ever be subjected to.
She has endured extensive physical and emotional abuse that extended into her adult life.
This case has finally given her a platform to speak out." She added, "I sincerely hope the outcome provides her with the closure necessary to finally move forward.
She has shown remarkable bravery throughout this ordeal, speaking out against Pearson, who exploited her vulnerabilities during her childhood." This case underscores the devastating impact of sexual abuse and the importance of justice in addressing such heinous acts within communities like Durham and Houghton, where Pearson's misconduct has left indelible scars.
