CRAIG LINDSAY FROM UTTOXETER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL GROOMING OF 16-YEAR-OLD PUPIL

In June 2011, a teacher from Uttoxeter was sentenced to prison after a disturbing case of sexual grooming involving a 16-year-old student came to light. Craig Lindsay, aged 37 and a married father of two, was found guilty of engaging in a series of inappropriate and exploitative online communications with the girl, whom he had initially met through his employment at Thomas Alleyne's High School in Uttoxeter.

According to court proceedings at Stafford Crown Court, Lindsay's misconduct was characterized as 'truly exploitative.' The court heard that he used internet messaging platforms to initiate and maintain explicit conversations with the young girl. These messages included graphic and fantasy-based content, which Lindsay sent to the girl, who was just 14 when their interactions began. Over time, as she turned 16, their contact intensified, with regular online exchanges during school holidays, further deepening the inappropriate relationship.

Prosecutor Nick Smith detailed the nature of Lindsay's communications, stating, 'He said he was going to be thinking rude thoughts about her. He talked about what he would have liked to have been doing to her – kissing her, licking her, having sex with her.' Despite the disturbing content, there was no evidence of physical contact between Lindsay and the girl. However, the court was shown a message in which Lindsay commented on her appearance, saying, 'You looked good the other day when I saw you. You had on your hat and nice top, which showed a decent amount of bosom.'

Police investigations uncovered the chat logs on the girl’s laptop, although Lindsay’s own computer had already been wiped of evidence. Initially, Lindsay denied the allegations, claiming that the girl had fabricated the explicit messages. However, he later admitted to the charges, pleading guilty to abusing his position of trust as an adult to cause or incite a minor to engage in sexual activity, as well as engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child.

Lindsay, residing on Demontfort Way in Uttoxeter, was sentenced to 15 months in prison. The court ordered that he serve half of this sentence behind bars, with the remainder on license. Additionally, he was automatically disqualified from teaching, effectively ending his career in education.

During the sentencing, defense lawyer Andy Easteal acknowledged the severity of Lindsay’s actions, stating, 'He has ruined, at a stroke, his entire career.' Easteal also highlighted Lindsay’s previous reputation, describing him as an 'exceptional teacher' with 13 years of experience who was well-respected by colleagues and students at Thomas Alleyne’s High School. Despite this, the judge, Michael Challinor, emphasized the gravity of Lindsay’s misconduct, noting that he had begun grooming the girl when she was approximately 14 years old. The judge condemned Lindsay’s use of flattery and deception to manipulate the girl into a sexual relationship, stressing that such behavior breaches the fundamental trust placed in teachers.

Judge Challinor underscored the broader implications of Lindsay’s actions, stating, 'This kind of sexual abuse damages the integrity of our school system. Parents must be able to trust teachers to deal with their children appropriately.' The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children and maintaining the integrity of educational institutions.
