BISHOP AUCKLAND MAN JAILED FOR ASSAULTING PARTNER IN TAXI
A violent individual who attacked his partner in the back of a moving taxi in a 'disgraceful' incident has been imprisoned.Cory Lavery punched the woman and grabbed her neck during the ride, leaving her bloodied, bruised, and distressed.
The incident occurred just before 9 pm on March 14 when a taxi driver picked up Lavery and his victim from Tesco in Gateshead.
Both appeared intoxicated and were arguing during the journey.
The taxi driver attempted to calm the situation but was unsuccessful as Lavery assaulted the woman by punching her two or three times and grabbing her neck while the vehicle was in motion.
After reaching their destination in Bensham, Gateshead, the argument continued outside the vehicle, with Lavery pushing the woman several times.
Police arrived at the scene and found the victim with a bloodied nose, multiple bruises, and visibly upset.
Despite this, she chose not to support the prosecution.
Lavery, 30, of Seymour Street, Bishop Auckland, who has 32 previous convictions and was on a community order for shoplifting at the time, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was sentenced to 18 months in jail.
The judge, Carolyn Scott, described his behavior as disgraceful, noting the victim’s vulnerability and the prolonged nature of the attack.
The court was told she had a bloodied nose and was distressed, pleading for help.
Lavery's legal representative stated he was remorseful and that it was a toxic relationship exacerbated by heavy drinking.
The judge emphasized that only an immediate prison sentence was appropriate, considering the severity of the assault and the victim’s condition.
